Full-Time Writing and Making Money: Myths and Realities

Every person who can write a paragraph or a few lines calls himself a Writer. He thinks the only difference between him and a celebrated writer is 'Fame and Money'. He starts believing that his writings can change the World and are material for Multi-Starrer HollyWood flicks. Such 'Writers' feel that they can motivate the youth and solve all the problems of the world by their Pen. However, the rest of the World counts only Best-Selling authors with maximum public appearances and Google Hits. Moreover, there are infinite number of Bloggers. Everybody has immense faith in his Intellectual Ability. Now, who will give away the certificates certifying 'Yes, Sir You are a Writer'. This is a very Subjective issue. Also, everybody can't be a BestSelling Author or Nobel Laureate or Pulitzer Prize Winner.

Many Writers (even the prominent ones) do Copy-Paste act. Then comes 'Plagiarism'. For a while forget everything and focus on 'Research'. What is Research? Copy Pasting or Lifting or Plagiarising Content from miscellaneous sources and confessing the same in the footnotes! Coming back to Writing, Is it not more or less 'Reproduction of Ideas'? UnDoubtedly, it is a Debatable Matter. Nevertheless, Writing is an Art. And an Art can't be Mastered. One can just unfold some of its infinite layers. You like it or not, some people have their finger in every Pie. They compare writers with those Typists who are fortunate enough to be over-paid and oughtn't to be paid more than baby-sitters! Indeed, society doesn't find writing a 'Profession'.

The corporate world wants an army of writers to promote their products and kickstart their enterprise. Hence, initially they 'respect' writers. In reality, they consider them 'some strange and under-productive guys possessing catchy vocabulary to earn their bread'. After some time, the so-called Leaders who are a direct product of top 'B-School Factories' analyse the basics and find the source of such plenty of 'writers'. Soon writers are given too much work and they resign or are forced to Resign. This is how an Art is commercialised and ultimately exploited. This 'Use and Throw' policy is true for every Art. Thus, those who feel that they can feed themselves by Writing and lead a peaceful life are actually risking the future of many. Writing, like every Art needs time and appreciation. It can assist Trade but can never be a Commodity of Trade. However, exceptions are everywhere.

I strongly believe that Writing is a Service or Art or Practice (or call it whatever you like) that helps one in Expression of Thoughts and Realisation of the Self. Whether you are tagged as a writer or not (by any authority) is not important unless you personally utilise this Art and elevate your write-ups every time you write. If you learn, enjoy and grow by writing every piece, you are indeed a Writer. Money, Fame and Recognition are not bad if you manage to achieve them either deliberately or undeliberately. In order to earn money through Writing, you need several things including Luck, Network, Fame, Understanding of What's in Vogue and Quality Content. However, if you don't have them, that would not make you a bad writer. There is nothing called Bad or Good Writer. Either you write or you don't. You Improve or you Don't. That's all. (You are the Judge.)
