India: A Simple Analysis

What is India? We Indians claim that we taught the rest of the world everything and the world should be grateful to us for the same. On the other hand, the world finds India a country full of Mystery and Diversity with snakes and diseases in profusion. I am not trying to force a consensus here. Opinions may be divided. Nevertheless, we all would agree that ultimately what matters is the End Product out of the Assembly Line. So, from being host to several indigenous and foreign dynasties from across the planet and painful awakening to rising in revolt to achieve Independence, we Indians have come a long way.

Now, let us try to analyse below the contemporary India and find the plight of its people inside out and upside down:

  • Most of the Indians reside in villages. Most of these villages are unelectrified and deprived of basic living amenities such as potable water and health facilities. Here, the primary profession is Agriculture and Allied Activities such as Fishery, Horticulture, Bee-Keeping, Dairy and Cattle Rearing. Most of these people neither understand nor want to understand what GDP or Per Capita Income is. All they want is a simple, peaceful and hassle-free life for their families. These farmers live in penury, but feed the whole nation. They have to suffer in both cases: UnderProduction - inability to pay debts and earn surplus to meet family needs such as marriage and treatment. OverProduction: No markets, No well-formulated pricing policy and No proper storage facility leading to the decaying of the produce. Nobody bothers to discuss the atrocities inflicted on them by local Money-Lenders and other dominating thugs of the area. These criminals flourish under the blessings of the regional police and legislators. This vicious-nexus has broken the backbone of the poor Indian farmer. Where would they go and find shelter to start life afresh? Finally, the only option left to them is suicide. Such incidents have become so rampant that Farmers' Suicides make no headlines; just 4-5 lines are spared for them in the inner pages of any newspaper covering regional news!

  • India is an over-populated country. Although we Indians have been gifted with almost everything in profusion, yet we struggle to achieve minimum happiness because there are so many contenders for everything ranging from a loaf of bread to government jobs. Every Indian covets Public Sector jobs because the Private Sector exploits and underpays him without any job security. Hiring and Firing depends on the whims of the employer. The only exception to this exploitation is a bunch of a few students graduating from reputed institutes like IITs or IIMs or some foreign universities. The only way to get admission to these reputed Indian institutes is Entrance Examination. It is really tough: read this excerpt from one of such brochures "Candidates seeking admission to the institute have to get through a rigorous entrance examination which has been so designed that only the best minds can qualify. Successful candidates have to appear for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) at their own expenses. The final selection will be made on the basis of the merit list based on Entrance, GD and PI and keeping in mind the prevaling Reservation Policy of the Government of India..." We Indians claim unity in diversity, but we have an assortment of reservation policies based on caste, religion, region, riots and what not! Hence, we have Over-Population, UnEmployment, Poverty and MalNutrition. Still, every educated government employee or illiterate street vendor here wishes to have at least two children!

  • Unity in Diversity is no more an Indian concept. It has gradually evaporated and the residue is a mixture of Secessionists, J&K Debate, Reservation Policy, Escalating Demands for New States and Disputes between States over River-water. As if these were not enough, now we have India (urban citizens) Vs. Bharat (rural citizens) Debate and English Speakers Vs. Mother Tongue Speakers Debate. Indian cities are over-crowded and hence everything here has been over-priced. The major chunk of urban-dwellers' income is spent in paying house rents, EMIs for house and car, costly education, expensive but unhealthy food, branded clothes (it is an unwanted necessity, otherwise your colleagues won't accept and respect you) and weekend Cinema at multiplexes and pompous restaurants. In this way, only a meagre amount is left as Savings. Now, it is very easy to understand the plight of those who are without house and jobs in a city! It is worse than being lost in a dense forest full of carnivores. As already discussed the plight of farmers, most of the villagers have migrated to cities and foreign countries only to work there as "easily available cheap labourers". In spite of all the atrocities cities inflict on their residents, they serve as an "oasis" for UnEmployed India. In the end, these people have the assurance that "your city won't let you sleep hungry".

  • What is Disaster Management? We Indians don't know this 'foreign' concept. Neither are our policy makers interested in it. First, Horizontal-Mobilisation and then Vertical-Mobilisation leading to multi-storey buildings. We blindly copy the West, but never pay heed to the safety measures they adopt. Floods, Famines, Land Sliding, Over-Rain, Cyclones, Earthquakes and many more 'Unexpected Guests' are heartily welcomed here. We call it "Nature's Wrath" or "Negligence or Over-Activity of the Residents" and dispose of the litter. Finally, the relief work heavily depends on Government Aid and Donation from across the world and its successful execution becomes the sole responsibility of the Indian Army and Para-Military Forces. Like the Farmers' Suicides, those personnel or civilians die in affected areas make no headlines. This in itself is a disaster that demands immediate attention.

  • Internal Security seems to be left to the mercy of anti-social elements, insurgents and militant outfits. Here, Peace depends on their mood and whims. We Indians are not bothered unless we lose our dear ones. If we are not affected, it is normal and just 'unfortunate'. Only one-liners like "...the Government should do something..." are suffice to move to the next "Entertainment Channel". Moreover, if the situation escalates and goes out of control, the Indian Army is there to bleed and die for us! Nothing but only this attitude has bred and strengthened Naxalism, Separatists, Terrorism and Divisive Forces. Now, who cares for our daughters being victimised everyday through Acid-Attacks and Rapes?

  • Foreign Policy? Do we have one or a set of other countries to do the honours for us? Everybody knows the nature of India's Neighbouring Countries. We very well know how they respond to our stimulus. Looks like as if headless bodies, scarred faces, punctured eyes, tongue-less mouths, mutilated noses and ears were not enough to open our eyes. Nevertheless, our policymakers want ''more friendly terms'' at the cost of our soldiers. Any small, thin, tall, fat, poor or weak country can insult India whenever it wants. Our reaction is limited to clarifying our stand and 'Damage Control'. We are more concerned about how our reaction would affect the feelings of our people following a particular religion or residing in a particular area. Moreover, our officials are busy travelling across the world in order to 'understand' and 'strengthen' bi-lateral ties. Tax-payers' money is never valued in this country.

  • We taught the world Ahimsa (Non-Violence) and Ethics. Where has these moral values gone to? The credit goes to Corrupt Politicians, Orthodox Bureaucracy, Reluctant Intellectuals and Frustrated Youths. Do we have any kind of Legal Consciousness? Things have become so Complicated and Juxtaposed that it has become difficult to decide who is a criminal and who is innocent. Everybody wants convenience at the cost of others. Friendship and Relationships are just a cover-up. In the end, what we want is more comfort and more powers so that we can influence others. This is no more the place where Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha descended. Sacrifice and Martyrdom are no more valued here. The only policy followed here is subjugation and subordination.

Has anything been leftout? Why don't you fill it up yourself in the space provided______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I wonder why our enemies are working so hard to exterminate us. We are already on the verge of Self-Destruction. I also wonder why our citizens are busy:

1. Learning English with Global Accent (We have a set of Classical Languages.)

2. Boasting of watching live Tennis Tournaments and Formula 1 Cars (Is Cricket mania not enough?)

3. Showing off Sports Bikes and Luxury Cars (Who will build world class roads for these cool-things?)

4. Attending International Concerts and Gigs (Why don't you enjoy Indian diversity and celebrate several festivals?)

5. Flaunting the NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Tag (How much insult can you tolerate from your European Friends? IITs and IIMs are meant to serve India, not other countries!)

Seriously Speaking: Mother India is bleeding. She needs her sons and daughters to protect and re-establish her lost glory. Now, it is time to return the favour. There is no time to be wasted. Hurry Up!
